“Behold As You Pass By: The Beauty Of Old Cemeteries” by Gavin Esposito

Being outside is a good way to clear the soul, be it the beauty of pebbles on a beach or the anticipation of witnessing an oncoming storm. Gavin Esposito uses photography to convey the emotions he feels being in an everyday, outdoor environment. A back road becomes a portal to nature’s unknown and a winter tree becomes an arch to a barren land.

Being a native of Hubbard, OH many of his photographs are local to Trumbull, Mahoning, Geauga and Ashtabula Counties. While he is pursuing a history degree at Youngstown State University it is interesting for him to shoot local historical sites that mirror the subjects he is studying and convey sentiment with them, with his favorite being old cemeteries. Often viewed without a passing glance and forgotten by many, old cemeteries are portrayed as places of fear, however to Gavin’s mind (and lens), they’re simply open-air museums filled with the historical records of those who have come before us and entire works of arts chiseled into stone. These both, when joined with the landscapes they exist in, make old cemeteries for a subject that’s surprisingly photogenic.

His goal is that after seeing his work, people are inspired to study the snowflake that falls on their coat, see all the different blues in the sky and take time to remember the historical past when their eyes are cast upon a weather worn gravestone.
