For Janie

by Alex Myers

God forgive the banisters when they splinter,

Drifting onward,

The same course.

Black phantoms guide them along;

They’re just offshore.

Children shake with mouths open,

Screams echoed by obsequious demons,

Handcarts to hell filled with atrocities.

The lugubrious mothers,

The dejected fathers,

The worst will permeate into the water.

Swim on

Through the rot, the black, the weight.

Placate your masters with your cargo.

Spill your droves from your hull.

For Janie and Johnny, Jane and John,

May peace find you all.

Alex Myers has a much better understanding of humanity’s shortcomings than the amount of chickens it takes to feed a wing addiction on Super Bowl Sunday.
